About Qingming Festival

Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, Spring Outing Festival, or Ancestors' Day, is one of the four major traditional Chinese festivals (alongside Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival). It carries a dual significance as both a natural solar term and a cultural holiday—it is the fifth of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese calendar, and also the most important occasion for honoring ancestors.

Qingming Festival typically falls between April 4 and April 6 in the Gregorian calendar. During this time, spring returns and nature comes back to life. It is a season for sweeping tombs, paying respects to ancestors, and remembering loved ones, as well as an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and embrace the beauty of spring. The festival embodies the traditional Chinese virtue of "revering ancestors and cherishing heritage," reflecting respect for the departed while celebrating harmony between humanity and nature.

Major customs of Qingming Festival include tomb sweeping, spring outings, planting willow branches, flying kites, swinging, and tree planting. In terms of food, people in the Jiangnan region enjoy eating qingtuan (sweet green rice balls), while in parts of northern China, sānzi (fried dough twists) are popular. In 2006, Qingming Festival was inscribed on the first list of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
